Returning to an earlier topic: Strictly speaking, “sails” is metaphorical here. But it doesn’t call attention to itself, and it helps us to see/feel what you saw/felt.
It helped to have you point out the metaphor here, Bill, because I can see how this metaphor is more explicit than, say, the metaphor in the Basho haiku (if that actually is a metaphor, which we, or at least I, haven’t made our minds up about yet 🙂 ). More to think about…
